Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Located about 100 miles east-northeast of San Diego. I took highway 79 through Cuyamaca Rancho State Park to Julian. It was the most interesting drive I've ever done. The ride took me through spacious country sides, along narrow winding roads, and also through some of the most rugged and beautiful views. I know my pictures can only capture a small portion of the views and land that I saw. (Approximately 3 hour drive with all the sharp turns)

As I drove through Cuyamaca you could see where a good portion of the park had experienced a forest fire. As I stepped out to take pictures I could still smell the heavy burnt scent. I was informed at the Borrego Visitor's center that the Cuyamaca forest fire took place in 2003. I was amazed that after 5 years the smell and the devastation were still evident.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is about 25 miles east-to-west and 50 miles north-to-south, it is California's largest state park encompassing more than 600,000 acres. The average yearly rain fall is about 6 inches. I just happened to pick one of those rare times that it was raining (sprinkling intermittently). I was asked if I would be interested in the off road auto map. Of course I said yes! Then I was asked what I was driving. I told him a 4 cylinder Mazda. I was a little bummed when I was told I needed a jeep or similar vehicle for off road driving. The first place I stopped at before arriving to the visitor's center was Plum Canyon… I debated long and hard about parking and heading into the canyon, but decided to find the visitor's center and some food.
